Focus Lessons

Building Skills and Confidence

Our 11+ focus sessions

To deepen understanding, reinforce key skills and build confidence, our 11+ Focus Sessions are delivered in focused three-week blocks for children in Years 4 and 5.

Each three-week block concentrates on one specific subject area, giving children the time and opportunity to explore the topic in greater depth. Focus areas may include:

  • English Comprehension

  • Maths Reasoning

  • Verbal Reasoning

  • Non-Verbal Reasoning

  • Spatial Reasoning

By focusing on one subject for three weeks, children can revisit key concepts, tackle increasingly challenging questions and develop a deeper understanding of the skills they need for the 11+.

Building Confidence Through Little and Often Practice

Our Focus Sessions perfectly compliment our weekly lessons. In Year 5, we also offer weekly English and Maths lessons, helping children to steadily develop their knowledge, skills and confidence throughout the year.

We believe that little and often practice is one of the most effective ways to build confidence. Regular opportunities to practise help children become more comfortable working independently, apply their skills without relying on support and approach unfamiliar or challenging questions with greater confidence.

The combination of weekly lessons, focused three-week blocks and regular independent practice provides a comprehensive and targeted approach to 11+ preparation — helping children strengthen their core skills while developing the confidence and independence they need to succeed.

Children who attend regular Focus Lessons often study more confidently and effectively at home, helping them feel better prepared for the challenges ahead.

With the changes to the test dates and potential new challenges, we strongly encourage your child to attend as many Focus Lessons as possible. These sessions will help build confidence, strengthen understanding and ensure they feel as prepared as possible.

Preparing Children for the Unexpected

We also believe it is important to introduce children to new and unfamiliar challenges. The 11+ can include unfamiliar question styles, topics or problems, so we help children learn how to approach something they haven’t seen before. Rather than relying solely on familiar methods, we teach them how to stay calm, think carefully, break down the problem and apply the skills they already have to find a solution. This helps develop the flexibility, resilience and confidence they need when faced with the unexpected.

Little and often practice makes such a difference. By focusing on one subject at a time and revisiting key skills regularly, children build confidence, become more independent and feel better prepared to tackle challenging 11+ questions.
