About Year 6 SATs

SATs (Standard Assessment Tests) are national assessments taken by children in Year 6, at the end of Key Stage 2 in England. These assessments are designed to measure children’s attainment in English reading, English grammar, punctuation and spelling (GPS), and mathematics. SATs help schools and parents understand a child’s progress and identify areas for further support.

Children will face a reading comprehension paper that tests their ability to read and understand texts, answer questions, and infer meaning.
We focus on:

  • Improving vocabulary and inference

  • Practising different types of texts (fiction, non-fiction, poetry)

English Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling (GPS)

This section includes a grammar and punctuation paper as well as a spelling test.
We cover:

  • Grammar rules and sentence structures

  • Punctuation use (commas, apostrophes, etc.)

  • Spelling strategies and common word patterns

Mathematics

Children are assessed on arithmetic and mathematical reasoning across two papers.
We focus on:

  • Number and place value

  • Addition, subtraction, multiplication, division

  • Fractions, decimals, and percentages

  • Measurement, geometry, and statistics

  • Problem-solving and reasoning strategies
